I performed a couple of searches on geolocation and tracking a laptop/netbook but all i found was threads that were either closed because of the posts intentions or simply outdated with bad links. the question here is that i'm trying to learn how to prevent my recently bought asus eee pc 1018p(DDR2 model with atom N450) from being stolen and lost forever. I created a backtrack 5 persistent live usb(sandisk cruzer 8gb) and have several friends who trust me enough to use their computers and/or smartphones in the event my droid or netbook gets stolen. I have a rather unconventional setup for tracking my phone because my previous one was stolen and the antitheft software i had failed to give true location information. Its definitely not easy for to replace either. the setup i do have uses a type of remote-desktop-like application which i've puposefully hid from being seen by a normal user(ie thief). i had talked to police the day my phone was stolen and even when i had told them that i could locate my phone through its GPS(which i didn't know at the time that the application wouldn't work) they still said there was nothing they could do unless i could point out the individual with my device. After this experience i set myself out to learn everything necessary to prevent this nightmare from happening again and help prevent it from happening to others(i've set up several friends Androids with the same and tested to show that it worked). Now if my phone is stolen by chance i can log on to it through any web browser, text a keyword to maually cut on GPS and take control of my phone while watching on google maps in somewhat real-time.
now that i've given a little insight on that setup i'm trying to get something similar on my netbook. unfortunately i cannot afford anything like lojack and it doesn't have any kind of GPS technology. I'm trying to figure out if BT 5 (R1) has the tools to acquire the location of the router that my computer may be connected to if someone tries to log on to the net somewhere. I'm dual booting ubuntu 11.04 with win7 starter and would like to know how to do this for both(if the methods differ) if it's as much as just getting lat/long coordinates i could just enter those under google maps. if any of what i've requested is in violation of any laws please inform me and try to explain why. i've already looked into other software options but would rather learn how to do so manually because then the reliability falls on my knowledge of it rather than depending on an all-in-one package that may not work(as with the case of my first phone). I'm not interested in taking law into my own hands, I'd like t just be able to find my netbook in that event, locate the thief and inform the authorities. if there's a better way i'd also like to hear it.
Thanks
