  Abstract: On April 14, 2009 Microsoft released a patch (documented here) to fix the issues detailed in my previous Token Kidnapping presentation (download PDF). The patch properly fixed the issues but... This new presentation will detail new design mistakes and security issues that can be exploited to elevate privileges on all Windows versions including the brand new Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7. These new attacks allow to bypass new Windows services protections such as Per service SID, Write restricted token, etc. It will be demonstrated that almost any process with impersonation rights can elevate privileges to Local System account and completely compromise Windows OSs. While the issues are not critical in nature since impersonation rights are required, they allow to exploit services such as IIS 6, IIS 7, SQL Server, etc. in some specific scenarios. Exploits code for those services will be released. The presentation will be given in a very practical way showing how the new issues were found, with what tools, techniques, etc. allowing the participants to learn how to easily find these kind security issues in Windows operating systems.

  Net Neutrality and consumer benefit

  A story in Wired dated December 17th reports on a webinar presented by Allot Communications and Openet.

  A slide from the webinar shows how network operators could charge by the type of content being transported rather than by bandwidth:

  

  In an earlier post I said that strict net neutrality is appropriate for wired broadband connections, but that for wireless connections the bandwidth is so constrained that the network operators must be able to ration bandwidth in some way. The suggestion of differential charging for bandwidth by content goes way beyond mere rationing. The reason this is egregious is that the bandwidth costs the same to the wireless service provider regardless of what is carried on it. Consumers don’t want to buy content from Internet service providers, they want to buy connectivity – access to the Internet.

  In cases where a carrier can legitimately claim to add value it would make sense to let them charge more. For example, real-time communications demands traffic prioritization and tighter timing constraints than other content. Consumers may be willing to pay a little bit more for the better sounding calls resulting from this.

  But this should be the consumer’s choice. Allowing mandatory charging for what is currently available free on the Internet would mean the death of the mobile Internet, and its replacement with something like interactive IP-based cable TV service. The Internet is currently a free market where the best and best marketed products win. Per-content charging would close this down, replacing it with an environment where product managers at carriers would decide who is going to be the next Facebook or Google, kind of like AOL or Compuserve before the Internet. The lesson of the Internet is that a dumb network connecting content creators with content consumers leads to massive innovation and value creation. The lesson of the PSTN is that an “intelligent network,” where network operators control the content, leads to decades of stagnation.

  In a really free market, producers get paid for adding value. Since charging per content by carriers doesn’t add value, but merely diverts revenue from content producers to the carriers, it would be impossible in a free market. If a wireless carrier successfully attempted this, it would indicate that wireless Internet access is not a free market, but something more like a monopoly or cartel which should be regulated for the public good.

  Problema Cattura IV'S

  Innanzitutto non capisco se gli IVS sono i Beacons o i Data...
  se sono i Beacons è tutto veloce, ma non credo!
  Se sono i Data c'è un bel problema perchè ne trova più o meno 1 ogni due minuti, e la cosa non penso sia buona.
  
  Per favore mi dite come posso accelerare la cattura degli IVS.

  Ciao a tutti sono nuovo!

  Ciao a tutti sono nuovo del forum, era da molto tempo che volevo avvicinarmi a backtrack.
  Ho aspettato fino ad adesso a registrarmi perchè solo ieri ho insallato backtrack sul mio nuovo netpc samsung.
  Come primi passi ho configurato il wireless senza alcuna difficoltà, anche grazie al WICD :)
  La navigazione è perfetta.
  Quanto al crack delle reti mi interesso al momento solo delle wpa, perchè in zona non ci sono wep :)
  Ho letto qualche guida ma non sono riuscito a trovare le soluzioni a 2 domande, perchè non chiare oppure io non le ho capite:
  1. la cattura dell'handshake può avvenire solo se un client si connette all access point?
  2. Dopo tanta ricerca non sono ancora riuscito a trovare una wordlist in txt! Per caso potete linkarmene una?

  Conoscere BackTrack

  Ciao a tutti,
  
  sono un nuovo iscritto e mi ritengo il Newbie dei Newbie:) nel vero senso del termine cioè non capisco un accidente di ambiente linux:(...ma purtroppo leggendo quà e la questo mondo ha cominciato ad affascinarmi, quello che non ha mai fatto win, e quindi ho deciso di lanciarmi in questa avventura;)
  
  Chiedo cortesemente il vostro prezioso aiuto per tutto, ma iniziamo con calma e poco alla volta, ripeto, per me linux è arabo
  
  La prima cosa che vi chiedo oggi è: posso connettermi a internet con la mia chiavetta huawei della "tre" utilizzando BT4 in livecd? E, se si, come? Se, no, quali sono le alternative?
  
  Per ora solo questo, spero tanto in qualche vostra risposta, non incazzatevi se per voi sono cose basilari, per me non lo sono.
  Vi descrivo il mio portatile casomai potesse tornare utile:

  Come utilizzare xplico in VMWare?

  Ciao, premetto che prima di scrivere ho cercato in tutti i modi di venirne a capo da solo ed in realtà ho chiesto aiuto anche su un altro forum (ahimè) perchè non riuscivo a loggarmi su questo. Non essendoci riuscito da solo e non avendo ricevuto risposte sull'altro forum (ok, ok, mi dispiace averlo fatto, ma vi ho già detto che non riuscivo a loggarmi su questo :)) giro anche a voi il mio quesito.
  C'è qualcosa che mi sfugge nell'uso di xplico su VMWare.
  La configurazione del mio sistema è: Windos XP SP3 (su DELL Latitude D630) su cui gira VMWare Player 3.01 all'interno del quale ho installato un mesetto fa Back Track 4. La scheda di rete della macchina virtuale di BT4 è configurata in modalità NAT ed ho visto che l'IP assegnato da VMWare è 192.168.88.x, mentre gli IP sotto Win XP sono del tipo 192.168.1.x
  Ieri sera ho installato xplico in BT4 dopo aver visionato l'ottimo video di pointnext, ma dopo aver letto tutto quello che ho trovato su internet devo ammettere che non ho ben capito come funziona. Il mio "problema" è: dall'interno di VMWare posso monitorare solo ciò che succede nella sottorete 192.168.88.x o posso in qualche modo estendere l'osservazione a tutta la sottorete reale (formata dal mio portatile + un altro portatile in casa mia + un altro desktop sempre in casa mia)?
  Ho infatti provato a navigare da XP (192.168.1.x) e xplico non si è accorto di nulla, mentre navigando da un altro browser nello stesso ambiente BT4 (e quindi con IP 192.168.88.x) ho potuto vedere tutto ciò che xplico è capace di intercettare. Per inciso, aggiungo che su questa sottorete (di casa mia) ho già provato con successo ettercap, arpspoof, sslstrip, ecc., quindi non si tratta di un problema di rete o giù di lì.
  C'è qualcuno che può aiutarmi a chiarire questa cosa? C'è un modo per estendere il raggio d'azione di xplico a tutta la sottorete, così come fa per esempio ettercap?

  Vi segnalo, qualora non ve ne foste accorti, che la pagina da aprire se non si ricorda la password non è attiva... è questo il motivo per cui non riuscivo a loggarmi, visto che volevo evitare di creare un nuovo account.
