netsniff-ng is is a free, performant Linux network sniffer for packet inspection. The gain of performance is reached by 'zero-copy' mechanisms, so that the kernel does not need to copy packets from kernelspace to userspace. For this purpose netsniff-ng is libpcap independent, but nevertheless supports the pcap file format for capturing, replaying and performing offline-analysis of pcap dumps. netsniff-ng can be used for protocol analysis, reverse engineering and network debugging.

Hack a Day
[Jaroslav's] camera didn’t have a feature to measure the speed of its response in different modes so he figured out his own method. Using the microphone on his webcam he recorded the sound made by the mirror and shutter movements, then used Audacity to analyze the camera’s performance. When you get right down to it, [...]

Hack a Day
[Dmitry] was shopping for LEDs and accidentally pulled the trigger on the wrong type. Since he didn’t want to be wasteful, he figured he should at least take the time to build something with them. A LED matrix display was the obvious project choice, but he only had a PIC16F688 at his disposal. Since the [...]

Packet Storm Security Exploits
This Metasploit module exploits a hidden account in the com.trinagy.security.XMLUserManager Java class. When using this account, an attacker can abuse the com.trinagy.servlet.HelpManagerServlet class and write arbitrary files to the system allowing the execution of arbitrary code. NOTE: This Metasploit module has only been tested against HP OpenView Performance Insight Server 5.41.0.

Hack a Day
We always enjoy a good performance monitor here. Especially when it includes some nice meters to watch jump and bounce as we thrash the system. This particular one is based on a PIC18f2550 pushing a regular old analog VU meter and an RGB LED. There’s a great writeup there, including schematics, PCBs, and massive amounts [...]

Zero Day Initiative Advisory 10-026 - This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on vulnerable installations of Hewlett-Packard Performance Insight. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists in the handling of requests to the helpmanager servlet running on the Performance Insight web server. Insufficient input validation and authentication allows for arbitrary JSP pages to be uploaded which can be leveraged to execute arbitrary OS commands. Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to gain control of the affected system under SYSTEM credentials.

netsniff-ng is a high performance linux network sniffer for packet inspection. Basically, it is similar to tcpdump, but it doesn't need syscalls for fetching packets. Instead, it uses an memory mapped area within kernelspace for accessing packets without the need of copying them to userspace ('zero-copy' mechanism). Therefore, netsniff-ng is libpcap independent. netsniff-ng can be used for protocol analysis and reverse engineering, network debugging, measurement of performance throughput or network statistics creation of incoming packets on central network nodes like routers or firewalls.
