[Chris Fenton] needs your help. After constructing a 1/10th scale, cycle accurate Cray-1 supercomputer and finding a disk with Cray software on it, he’s ready to start loading the OS. There’s a small problem, though: no one knows how to boot the thing. [Chris] posted a disk image for a Cray-1/X-MP with the help of the people at [...]

Hi, newbie here (so don't bite me if I say something stupid :D, I have just started to learn.)
Ok, So I am right now dual booting slackware and windows 7, with slack installed later and being in MBR. So that Lilo boots up at boot time and asks me if I want to boot into windows or slack.
So far so good. :)
But I want to install BT to hdd, I ran it live and I thought I should install it to hdd, so my question is, if I installed BT now, will grub show all menu and let me boot into 'em. Or I should install BT First and then Slack so that lilo takes over the GRUB of BT if it is so will it show all my OS?
Please anyone help :( ...
I have googled but found nothing, this is only place I can get answer.
Any Help Is Appreciated...

Hello!
I'm not new to Linux or pen testing, but I am new to the Backtrack distro. A week or so ago I installed Backtrack 4 on my laptop at work, dual boot with Windows 7. The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv7. All was well until this morning, when I couldn't boot into either and was getting Grub error 22. I've tried googling and searching on these forums, but I haven't found anything specific to me.
I can boot from the live CD and mount /dev/sdb5 under /mnt.
Here is my output of fdisk -l:
# fdisk -l

Hi guys,
I've slackware 64 bit installed in partition sda1.
The BT4's installation is in sda3.
Now, if I install GRUB from BT4, I can boot BT4 without problem... but I can't boot Slackware (I can see it, but if I start nothing happens).
Same with Slackware, after installing LILO and added BT4 I can boot slackware but not backtrack (this time, I start BT and it hangs on USB devices, I have nothing attacched and it seems like it stops at the card reader).
I've acer aspire 5735z
I used BT for a long time without problem, this is the first time that I dual - boot.
Hope you can help!
Thanks

[Andreas] found that his home theater PC would not boot one day. Oddly, if he disconnected his HDMI cable from his TV, it would boot fine. While most of us would have dug into the PC, he realized that it was a signal from the TV that was incorrect. Luckily, LG had included a full [...]

About my setup:
MacBook Pro Santa Rosa (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
When I got my new 500gb hard drive, I partitioned it with 420gb for OS X, 40gb for Windows, and 40gb for Linux.
I then installed rEFIt and Windows 7 which all worked properly.
Last night I installed BackTrack 4 Pre-Final, resizing the Linux partition to 38gb to create a 2gb swap. Once the installation was done, BackTrack worked fine, and OS X still worked fine. Though when selecting Windows or Linux from rEFIt, I get the same Grub boot picker screen. First question: how can I get rid of this?
Second and more important problem: When I choose Windows from the Grub menu, I instantly get a Windows screen telling me there is an error with \Boot\BCD and that "an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data."
It would seem grub did something to mess up Windows' boot loader. When I insert my Windows 7 disc to try and repair it, the disc tells me something about it not being compatible with the OS installed.
Any ideas as to what I can do to get Windows to boot?

I've extracted the .iso and have been using grub to boot the kernel and initrd, but I'd like to make a few changes to the live cd. I've extracted the squashfs, copied my /root folder to save my configuration changes and compressed it again (while in backtrack to make sure I use the proper version of mksquashfs) and re-generated the manifest, using instructions from the ubuntu community docs on live cd customization (can't post link sorry)
However, the changes I made don't show up when I boot, its just a regular bt4 desktop and none of my personal files are on it. I'm positive that the right .squashfs is being used and that it's in the right place, so I'm guessing it's the manifest maybe?
If someone can help me along I'd like to write all this up into a tutorial because a lot of people here seem to be interested in customizing live cds but haven't been having luck with things like linux-live or reconstructor.

Hi, READ THIS OUT BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME OF LAZINESS ... yes I HAVE searched the forums, the FAQ's and the tuts, I have googled like crazy, but it seems that my problem is so basic that no one has bothered to make a thread about it.
I already know how to properly burn an iso to a CD / USB drive, BUT my problem is the actual CD .. do you have to get a 2gb+ CD / DVD for BT4? because I only have 700mb max CD's ... I read somewhere you can split it up and use 2 CD's somehow but it was very confusing for me because I'm very new at this (but I learn fast [; ) is this possible and if so, how?
USB drive is out of the question for me due to problems with the BIOS on my lappy, but I was told that dual boot up was possible without having to go into BIOS and change settings (can someone confirm?)
If one does need a 2gb+ cd/dvd for BT4 then I plan on installing the older versions which are a lot smaller than BT4.
Thanks to anybody who takes the time to read this and/or reply
Unanswered Questions:
Then is burning onto a blank DVD disc the only way I can dual boot with BT4? is there no way I can burn BT4 onto a regular 7xx mb cd? or the "splitting up and using 2 CD's"?
And can someone confirm that you don't need to be able to go into BIOS settings in order to dual boot?

Hello All,
I have an HP machine with a Dual Boot of Vista and BT4PF. I want to upgrade to BT4F, though. I'll probably install it in a virtual machine or on a USB drive...
Anyway, I am worried about ruining my windows partition. I have read posts online about formatting from the Windows OS and then changing the boot.ini file. WELL... That is all fine and dandy, and I will do that but I wanted to check with you all here to see if there are any suggestions or words of wisdom. Maybe I should go about this differently?
Also, random question: If I were to install the BT4F version on VirtualBox, could I save files and settings (persistent?) and still shutdown... without using this "snapshot" technique?
Thanks fellas

I wanted to use BT4 basically as a livecd that I can boot from my HDD and run from RAM, with persistent changes. I extracted the iso and copied it to it's own partition, and everything has worked great except for the persistence. I can't really figure out why this isn't working out of the box, maybe it's a grub2 error. I've been researching persistence and grub2, I'll post what I come up with but I'd appreciate help if anyone can see what I'm doing wrong.
/etc/grub.d/40_custom
Code:
menuentry "BT4 toram" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,12)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 5bda6579-1fe2-4099-8221-1a9f33f04164
linux /boot/vmlinuz BOOT=casper boot=casper toram persistent rw quiet fix-splash
initrd /boot/initrd.gz
}

-sudo mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdb1
et essayé avec les fichiers iso de "backtrack-linux.org/downloads" toujours avec unetbootin je n'ai même plus la fenêtre de boot mais directement le message boot error j'abandonne :(

I recently downloaded BackTrack 4 and have run into a problem.
My linux experience is limited and I'm only just starting to get a hang of using the console/UNIX commands ect. Before anyone jumps on me for asking to be spoon fed I'm searching for answers while I'm waiting for replies.
So, I downloaded BT4, and played with it as a Live USB (4gb), seemed nice enough and had a bunch of cool tools but i wanted to be able to save files and changes so i decided to buy a 16gb flash drive and install it onto that. I booted BT4 from a DVD and went through the install process, making sure that I installed it to the USB drive (sdb) however i think i forgot to click on the "Advanced" tab on the 7th and final step to change the boot loader from the default hd0 (i think?) to sdb, After BT4 finished installing I clicked to reboot, entered the BIOS and changed the boot from CD/DVD to USB, rebooted and got a boot error from the USB.
Realizing what must be causing the problem I booted from the DVD again, reformatted the USB drive and went through the install process again, this time making sure I set it to install the boot loader to sdb. Once it finished installing I rebooted, set the BIOS to boot from USB, and BT4 booted fine, i made a file and rebooted again just to make sure it was saving files and then shut down. Everything is roses right?
Well not quite, I removed the USB stick and tried to boot windows XP which is installed on my HDD and i got this error:
Quote:
GRUB Loading Stage 1.5.
GRUB loading please wait...
Error 21
|
This is no doubt caused from the first install where it installed the boot loader to hd0. Now i can't boot windows. I tried using the XP setup disk to repair the installation but that didn't work. How can i fix this?

i've tried modifying the 2.6.30.9 kernel to use PAE (turned on 64GB memory in menuconfig), then i made the kpkgs for kernel_image and kernel_headers, installed and got boot problems during the mount. I've tried the same with the lastest stable kernel (32.3) and even tried to install the latest kernel with no modifications (all the above done with the base .config being a zcat dump of /proc/config.gz) only to have the same issue. Is the BT4 kernel different from the mainline kernel? Has anyone else seen this issue?
The reason i'm doing all of this is due to the fact that i've got a bunch of memory in my laptop with only 3GB usable, and the next laptop i'm getting will likely have 8. Has anyone done this successfully?
I'm on a centrino2, and starting to think there might be some sort of problem with that...
