reverse engineering fuzzing Event:
Black Hat USA 2010 Abstract: You’ve fuzzed your favorite application and found a mountain of crashes, now what? BitBlaze is an open source binary analysis platform which can perform whole system taint tracing, dynamic symbolic execution, as well as static analysis. Using BitBlaze, it is possible to determine, upon application crash, which registers and memory locations are tainted from the fuzzed input and in what ways they are used. Furthermore, this taint information can give a level of understanding on what went wrong with the program and why, reducing crash analysis from days to hours and sometimes minutes. In this talk, we present BitBlaze as well as walk through real life case studies of its use.

Hack a Day
Automating something involving data from the Internet can be confusing when it comes to pages generated by user input. For instance, let’s say you want to scrape data from a page that loads after using a search box. [Andrew Peng] posted a quick and dirty example to help you write your own scripts. The example [...]

Hack a Day
It’s that time again, time to take on the machine with the Hackerspace, Crash Space (and part two)! The team of Californians set out and successfully turned the front of their building into a musical instrument, similar to [David Byrne's] Playing the Building. When a pedestrian walks by they set off distance sensors, which in [...]

Packet Storm Security Recent Files
MIT krb5 Security Advisory 2010-006 - When the MIT krb5 KDC receives certain Kerberos TGS request messages, it may dereference an uninitialized pointer while processing authorization data, causing a crash, or in rare cases, unauthorized information disclosure, ticket modification, or execution of arbitrary code. The crash may be triggered by legitimate requests. This is an implementation vulnerability in MIT krb5, and not a vulnerability in the Kerberos protocol.

Packet Storm Security Tools
FuzzDiff is a simple tool created to assist in helping make crash analysis during file format fuzzing a bit easier. When provided with a fuzzed file, a corresponding original un-fuzzed file, and the path to the targeted program, FuzzDiff will selectively un-fuzz portions of the fuzzed file while re-launching the application to monitor for crashes. This will yield a file that still crashes the target application, but contains a minimum set of changes from the original, un-fuzzed file. This can be useful in pinning down the exact cause of a crash.

Mandriva Linux Security Advisory 2010-041 - Multiple security vulnerabilities has been identified and fixed Certain malformed SLP messages can trigger a crash because the MSN protocol plugin fails to check that all pieces of the message are set correctly. In a user in a multi-user chat room has a nickname containing '' then libpurple ends up having two users with username ' ' in the room, and Finch crashes in this situation. We do not believe there is a possibility of remote code execution. oCERT notified us about a problem in Pidgin, where a large amount of processing time will be used when inserting many smileys into an IM or chat window. This should not cause a crash, but Pidgin can become unusable slow. Packages for 2008.0 are provided for Corporate Desktop 2008.0 customers. This update provides pidgin 2.6.6, which is not vulnerable to these issues.
