Hack a Day
It sounds like [Andrew] is trying to build a Pavlovian response into his behavior when it comes to online gaming. He wants to make sure he doesn’t miss out when all his friends are online, so he built this traffic signal to monitor Xbox Live activity. It will illuminate the lights, and drive the meters [...]

Hack a Day
While having a great white shark as your spirit animal may sound cool, we’ve found walking around in public wearing a gigantic set of mechanical jaws to be a bit of a hindrance. [abetusk] doesn’t have that problem; he can wear his awesome animatronic cat ears anywhere he pleases. The build was inspired by these extremely Japanese animatronic [...]

Packet Storm Security Advisories
Red Hat Security Advisory 2012-0137-01 - TeX Live is an implementation of TeX. TeX takes a text file and a set of formatting commands as input, and creates a typesetter-independent DeVice Independent file as output. The texlive packages provide a number of utilities, including dvips. TeX Live embeds a copy of t1lib. The t1lib library allows you to rasterize bitmaps from PostScript Type 1 fonts. The following issues affect t1lib code: Two heap-based buffer overflow flaws were found in the way t1lib processed Adobe Font Metrics files. If a specially-crafted font file was opened by a TeX Live utility, it could cause the utility to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the utility.

Hack a Day
[DJ FileSpnR] did a number on this IDJ Live hardware to make room for an integrated iPad. Those that have seen the hardware before may not even recognize it. In stock condition the controller has two turn-table actuators with cross-fader control in between them. The iPad perches on top like a book, making it a [...]

Hack a Day
[Kianoosh] was in Las Vegas over spring break and was fascinated by the real-time sports scores displayed at the casinos. He figured that this would be an easy enough project to duplicate, so he built a gigantic NBA scoreboard that updates live from the NBA website. The build uses the OS X Automator to pull [...]

Hack a Day
[Milosch] wrote in to tell us that he has recently released a bootable RFID live hacking system – something he has been diligently working on for quite some time. The live distro can be used for breaking and analyzing MIFARE RFID cards, as well as a reasonable selection of other well-known card formats. The release [...]

Quick, go to answers.hackaday.com and sign up for an account. Ages ago, we announced that we would be bringing a community driven question and answer system to Hackaday. We eventually got tired of waiting for the feature to be provided and improvised. Well, the wait is over. You can now post your own questions and [...]

Hack a Day
[Terry] is planning to launch his high altitude balloon within the next few days. As we’ve seen before he has gone for a general setup – GPS tracking, environment sensors including temperature and humidity and pressure, and 2 on board cameras – all with an expected height of about 100,000 feet. What makes this project [...]
