Hack a Day
[Frank] wanted a classy way of telling the time, so he built up a LED Pocket Watch. The watch features 132 LEDs for displaying the time, two buttons to activate and change modes, a vibration motor, and a buzzer. It’s controlled by a picoPower ATmega645P, which has enough pins to drive the array of LEDs, an internal [...]

Hack a Day
Eight long years ago, when the Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity were steaming towards our dusty neighbor, JPL systems engineers [Julie Townsend] and [Scott Doudrick] were stuck trying to solve a very strange problem. After the twin rovers landed, the rover drivers would have to live on Mars time. Because a Martian day lasts 24 hours, 39 minutes, rover team [...]

Hack a Day
Recently, [Alan] broke out the ‘ol Atari 2600 to relive his childhood with a bit of Yar’s Revenge and Adventure, but after looking at his new TI EZ430 Chronos watch, he figured he could add a bit of motion control from this classic game system. He used the accelerometer in this watch to play Ms. Pacman by tilting his wrist, an [...]

Hack a Day
The 28th Annual Chaos Communications Congress just wrapped things up on December 31st and they’ve already published recordings of all the talks at the event. These talks were live-streamed, but if you didn’t find time in your schedule to see all that you wanted, you’ll be happy to find your way to the YouTube collection [...]

honeypot Event:
Hashdays 2010 Abstract: Everybody is doing honeypots nowadays. There are many different tools out there - even for the technologically illiterate. Honeypots help us detect uninvited guests and thanks to honeypots we know what happens when the pests feel a little bit too much at home on our systems. But have you ever looked over the shoulder of such an attacker? Do you know how quick they type, how many times they need to start over to write a simple 'ifconfig' and how long it takes them to understand why the command 'ifcongif' is not known by the rooted system? Hilarity is guaranteed to ensue. When you like a good laugh and know a good hack when you see one, this talk is the right one for you. The first (very quick) part is about the toolchain used. The second (and much longer) part is about what to expect when watching over the shoulders of 31337 h4x0r5.

Hack a Day
We hate to admit it, but we missed out on the TI Chronos watch deal last week. While we’re still a little bit burned over the fact that these watches sold out so fast, [Ahmet] sent in his Open Source Bluetooth Watch and we’re thinking this could eventually be a decent replacement. The watch is [...]

While the Segway enjoyed a few years of fame before falling off the radar, [Marcelo Fornaso] is hoping his creation has quite a bit more staying power. Inspired by the Segway’s ability to balance itself, he started thinking about how the concept could be improved. He felt that one of the Segway’s shortcomings arose out [...]

Watch out Spidey, there’s a new wall climber in town! Researchers [Matthew Journee, XiaoQi Chen, James Robertson, Mark Jermy, and Mathieu Sellier] recently unveiled their wall climbing wonder bot at the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. Like most other wall climbing bots, theirs operates on the Bernoulli principle to keep it stuck [...]

Hack a Day
If there is one thing hackers return to time and time again, it is clock/watch hacking. There are always creative ways to tell time, and with several “hackable” wristwatches on the market, there is bound to be no shortage of neat timepiece hacks. [hudson] from NYC Resistor has decided to take on a fun challenge [...]

Watch out, these sunglasses are actually a head mounted display. [Staffan] says he’s wanted dataglasses since ’95, but whats currently out there makes the user look ridiculous, and we have to agree. While his forum posts are a little lacking in detail, he’s promised us more info soon. And for now lets us know at [...]

Hack a Day
Leather work, copper tubing, small easy to use package. Now that is a beautiful Arduino Watch. [Matthew Garten] has retrofitted his old Arduino Watch and given us the details that we crave. Previously, all we had was a video and a few pictures of a quite uninviting watch. But now we know it has temperature, [...]

Hack a Day
[Ziyan] and [Zach] built a door entry system that uses a code entered from your wristwatch. They’re using the TI eZ-430 Chronos that we saw in November. There is a project box mounted over the deadbolt lever. Inside, the wireless fob waits for the watch to connect. When a watch has connected and the correct [...]
